Project Description

The enclosed central courtyard at Southland Rehabilitation & Care Center in Norwalk possesses the unique spatial quality of being situated at the basement level, with the lobby, an open terrace, and resident room towers rising above it. Its visual prominence and functional relationship of being adjacency to the existing Rehabilitation Suite strongly influenced the underlying design intent to create a space that is not only visually pleasing to all the users both in and around the courtyard, but also a space that has become a tangible and measurable asset for the nursing home.

Ramps and stairs of different slopes and heights were designed into the terraced trellis and different textures were introduced to the walking surfaces. The courtyard has become a main therapy component that allows residents to heal and grow stronger while enjoying the great Southern California weather and the soothing sounds of water.
